Here are three performances at UFC Vegas 39 that didn’t get as much love as they deserved.
It was another eventful fight day at the UFC Apex for UFC Vegas 39, which featured just about everything a fight fan could want to see.
In the main event, UFC strawweight contender Marina Rodriguez pulled off the upset over elite grappling specialist Mackenzie Dern, earning the unanimous decision victory. The win will more than likely catapult her into the strawweight title discussion.
But, there were plenty of other impressive performances on the card that didn’t get as much credit as they probably deserved. UFC fans were treated to wild submissions, crazy striking exchanges, and more on the UFC Vegas 39 prelims and main card.
Here are three of the best moments that flew under the radar at UFC Vegas 39.
Alexandr Romanov gets vicious TKO over Jared Vanderaa
The UFC Vegas 39 prelims featured plenty of exciting action, but it was UFC heavyweight Alexandr Romanov that stole the show with a TKO victory over Jared Vanderaa.
Romanov made his walk to the UFC octagon with a terrifying look on his face, and he delivered with a dominant performance over Vanderaa. After getting Vanderaa to the ground, Romanov landed some brutal ground-and-pound that finished the bout.
Romanov remains undefeated in his professional career (15-0), including four straight wins in his UFC tenure. He’ll look to continue his climb up the heavyweight division and possibly earn a spot in the rankings.
Lupita Godinez sinks in a nasty armbar on Silvana Gomez Juarez
Dern vs. Rodriguez wasn’t the only strawweight showcase on the card, as Lupita Godinez took on Silvana Gomez Juarez with a possible spot in the rankings on the line.
Godinez had mostly been known for her striking skills entering her fight with Juarez but showcased elite grappling to earn a submission win. The fight took place on short notice after Sam Hughes withdrew after testing positive for COVID-19, forcing Godinez to change her strategy.
Godinez sank in the first-round armbar for her first career submission win. It was also the first UFC win for Godinez after a brief tenure as an LFA champion.
UFC Vegas 39: Mariya Agapova overwhelms Sabina Mazo, gets the late submission
UFC flyweight Mariya Agapova had mostly been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons leading up to UFC Vegas 39, but she capitalized on the opportunity and put on a dominant performance over Sabina Mazo.
After accusations of drug and verbal abuse by a former American Top Team teammate, Agapova looked for a new chapter in her professional career. She showed great movement on the feet that lead to her choking out Mazo in the third round.
With the win, Agapova moves to 10-2 in her career and got back in the win column after a disappointing loss to Shana Dobson. She has a lot of potential at flyweight and seems to be improving with each octagon appearance.
