Strictly: Kevin Clifton discuss possible ‘legends’ tour

Kevin Clifton was once best recognised as one of many talented professional dancers on BBC series Strictly Come Dancing ahead of his shocking departure in 2020.

Otherwise known as ‘Kevin from Grimsby’, the natural performer was born to be on stage – as shown in his new West End career.

The former Strictly pro has amounted an incredible fortune, thanks to a stint of different careers and television appearances.

Kevin’s days on Strictly moulded him into a television star that helped equate his net worth – estimated to be between £1 million and £10m, according to TrendingCelebsToday.com.

Kevin was acting professional dancer on the show between 2013 – 2020.

After an incredible seven years on the show, his departure ultimately stemmed from the decision to focus on “other areas of [his] life and career”.

He told HuffPost: “I was all set to move onto Strictly Ballroom, which was supposed to open in September. To be honest, that was the main reason I took the decision to leave Strictly Come Dancing. It was always a bit of a dream of mine to play that role in Strictly Ballroom.

“I’d been in touch with Strictly Come Dancing and said, ‘If I get offered this, I’m not going to be able to say no to it.’ So I got offered the part, said I was leaving Strictly for a life in the theatre… and then there was no more theatre. So everything sort of disappeared, or moved over to 2021.”

Kevin’s career was put on an abrupt halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic as theatres are non-essential shops were forced to close as the virus swept the nation.

“After finishing last series with the Children in Need trophy and the Christmas Special I want to leave on a high and have therefore decided the time has come to move on and focus on other areas of my life and career,” he added.

Throughout the glory years, the dancing pro danced with household names, including the likes of Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid, The Saturdays star Frankie Bridge, and Louise Redknapp.

Celebrity favourites Kevin and television presenter Stacey Dooley won the series in 2018 and quickly became one of the favourite couples in showbiz.

The pair stole the nation’s hearts as they confirmed their romance just a few months after the show had aired.

The couple has sparked several rumours in recent years as fans hope for an exciting engagement.

After posting sweet snaps from a holiday last year, fans were convinced that they had seen Stacey, 35, debuting a few rings on her wedding finger, which turned out not to be the case.

Kevin hasn’t hung up his dancing shoes for marriage just yet as the Strictly star didn’t ruled out a return to the popular series in the future.

Asked if he’d consider becoming a judge, he said: “I’d love that actually, I think that would be great – if I can get round once on a bike without ending my career.”

For now, Kevin is focusing on his theatre career after performing in the production of Singin’ in the Rain at the London Well’s theatre.

Kevin played the part of Cosmo Brown in the theatre production – played by Donald O’Connor in the film.

Speaking to Loose Women about the role, Kevin said: “I’ve seen Singin’ in the Rain hundreds of times. It’s one of the most iconic if not the most iconic musical in film history.

“Stacey said to me that they should make a show out of this film. I told her it’s a massive deal and a massive show but she said to me that when they do the show again, I should play the part of Cosmo,” he added. “I told her I’d love to as the character plays such an iconic role.”

“I went for an audition, I wasn’t sure which way it would go. Stacey had the belief in me that I would get the role and here I am ready to play Cosmo,” he added.

As a natural performer, Kevin couldn’t wait to get back on stage.

He said: “It’s incredible and I appreciate it more now. I’ve always loved being on stage and I think for a lot of performers its a real part of your identity.”

Since leaving the BBC ballroom series, Kevin has contemplated other lines of work after signing up to ITV series The Games – hosted by Holly Willoughby and Freddie Flintoff.

Whilst he has been offered many reality shows, this was the one that most excited him. “MasterChef might be easier but I can’t cook either,” he laughed.

“I’m turning 40 this year and feel like I want to do things that are out of my comfort zone. It may be a midlife crisis but I’ve got to show these young ’uns how it’s done.”

Kevin is currently leaving fans swooning as he ventured into a new line of TV by starring in The Games alongside other celebrities.

Eleven of Britain’s favourite stars are taking part in 10 events including diving, hurdles, cycling, swimming and gymnastics, all on live television.

The former Strictly favourite revealed that he had started preparing for the competition show last year as he described how training has made him fitter than ever.

“I think I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been in – even including dancing,” he said. “People keep saying ‘oh you’re a dancer, you’ll be brilliant’ but I’m not sure how the paso doble translates to any of this.”

His TV presenter girlfriend Stacey finds the idea of him doing diving, Tom Daley-style, most amusing.

“She thinks it’s hilarious that at one point the camera is going to go past and I’m going to be stood there in my Speedos,” said Kevin “I haven’t thus far stuffed them.”

The Games, will be on ITV, Monday, May 9 to Friday, May 13 at 9pm.
