Marina Rodriguez defeats Mackenzie Dern at UFC Vegas 39 and shows she could be a problem at 115
Marina Rodriguez has solidified herself as a legitimate contender in the UFC‘s women’s strawweight division, as she comes away with a decision victory over Mackenzie Dern in the main event of UFC Vegas 39.
Rodriguez has now won three straight and is now 5-1-1 in her last seven fights, with the one loss being the sole one on her professional MMA record.
“I’ve been ready to fight five rounds, fight for a title, since the day I started this thing,” Rodriguez said in her Octagon post-fight interview.

Dern went in for the clinch in the first round and paid for it, as Rodriguez seemed to have a lot more control there, throwing and landing more strikes over the course of the first five minutes.
Dern carefully tried for the clinch in the second round and managed to get the fight to the ground, looking to grab a limb while Rodriguez tried to scramble away. Rodriguez tried to choke Dern out from the bottom, but Dern survived, going over Rodriguez. After a couple of different armbar attempts, including one with her legs, Dern got into mount and tried to finish the fight, though Rodriguez saw the horn to end the second round.
Rodriguez got back control in the third round, showing effective striking and mostly preventing Dern from getting back on the inside.
Rodriguez continued her striking prowess over Dern in the fourth round, but Dern scored a takedown late and got her in deep trouble, throwing several punches from mount in an attempt to finish the fight and going for an armbar but being unable to secure it before the horn.
Dern tried to come forward and get back to the grappling dominance, but Rodriguez’s striking continued to be too much in the final round.
All three judges scored the fight 49-46 for Rodriguez.
