UFC Vegas 40: Norma Dumont defeated Aspen Ladd in the main event.

Norma Dumont defeated Aspen Ladd via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47), at UFC Vegas 40 on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, live from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.

“I know she took the fight on short notice. But she’s a 145er. She’s got all the strength, and I want her to keep fighting (at featherweight)… That’s what we trained for. We know her strength is ground and pound,” said Dumont with the assistance of a translator.

The first round got underway with Dumont controlling the middle of the Octagon and Ladd circling on the outside. Both women were extremely cautious for most of the round. Dumont controlled most of the round with her jab. Ladd’s best shot came in the dying seconds of the round. The second round was very similar to the first round. Both women continued to be conservative. The action started to pick up in the third round, compared to the first two rounds. Ladd pushed forward and was more aggressive but never landed more than one punch. Dumont continued to find success with her jab and was starting to find success landing combinations.

After getting ripped by her coach for the second straight round, Ladd came out and immediately went for a takedown. Ultimately, Dumont was able to fend off the takedown attempt. Dumont continued to find success with her jab. From the clinch, Dumont tripped Ladd. With 25 seconds remaining in the round, Ladd flipped the position and got on top. From the top, Ladd reigned down strikes and elbows.

Ladd’s coach continued to reiterate that she would need a finish if she was going to win the fight. The aggression at the end of round four continued for Ladd as she went after Dumont, whose nose started to bleed. The fight again hit a lull as the two women engaged in a clinch against the fence. Dumont displayed excellent defense throughout the fight. In the clinch, Dumont controlled the position and delivered several knees to the body.

Ladd and Dumont were not the orginal main event

The UFC Vegas 40 main event has gone through several changes. The card was originally supposed to be headlined by Miesha Tate and Ketlen Vieira. However, that fight was pulled from the card after Tate tested positive for COVID-19. Replacing the initial main event was a fight between Holly Holm and Dumont. However, Holm was forced to pull out of the fight with a knee injury. Holm was replaced by Ladd in the main event.

After struggling to make bantamweight, Ladd decided to move up to featherweight for the fight against Dumont. Ladd was originally supposed to fight Macy Chiasson on Oct. 2, but the fight was scrapped after Ladd missed weight and was pulled from the card due to health concerns. Saturday was Ladd’s first fight since she knocked out Yana Kunitskaya on Dec. 7, 2019. The loss dropped Ladd’s record to 9-2.

Dumont entered the Octagon on a two-fight winning streak. In her last fight, Dumont upset former featherweight title challenger Felicia Spencer by split decision. Dumont entered the fight with a 6-1 record. The lone loss coming in her UFC debut when she was knocked out by Megan Anderson. With her third straight win, Dumont could be next in line for a title fight with Amanda Nunes at featherweight. Nunes is currently scheduled to defend her bantamweight title at UFC 269 against Julianna Pena.
