Scotland’s cricketers silenced their opponents both on and off the field on Sunday as they made the perfect start to their T20 World Cup campaign.

All-rounder Chris Greaves was the hero as the underdogs secured a six-run victory over Bangladesh in Muscat. Greaves top scored with 45 as the Scots posted a seemingly 140-9, and then took two wickets as The Tigers fell short on 133-7.

Understandably, the players were in the mood to celebrate afterwards, and in the changing rooms delivered a rousing rendition of their national anthem, Flower of Scotland.

Unbeknown to them, the din could be heard in the press room, where Bangladesh player Mohammad Mahmudullah was trying to field questions from reporters on his side’s shock defeat.

Instead, Mahmudullah was left looking thoroughly fed up as he waited for the singing to die down so that he could hear himself speak again.

The video was later posted online by the official @CricketScotland account, along with a humorous apology that read: “Sorry we will keep it down next time.”

To Mahmudullah’s credit, he remained patient despite his miserable demeanour, and did then continue his press conference once the singing had stopped.

Indeed, @CricketScotland later followed up the clip with “Credit to Mahmudullah for his composure!”

The footage went down well with cricket fans, many of whom noted the irony of Bangladesh being renowned for their own elaborate celebrations after victories.

@SolanaHodler wrote: “No @CricketScotland, you should rather increase volume. You don’t know how Bangaldesh behave with opponents when especially after they win matches!”

@bhuviii786 added: “At least @CricketScotland are celebrating after the win. You guys (Bangladesh) started celebrating even before you won against INDIA.”

Put in to bat, Scotland were reeling at 53-6 before Greaves added 51 runs with Mark Watt, who struck 22 off 17 balls, to post a respectable total.

The all-rounder himself hit two sixes and four fours in his 28-ball knock.

And then with the ball, he crucially removed the dangerous Mushfiqur Rahim for 38 and finished with two for 19 while Brad Wheal claimed three for 24.

Needing 24 off the last over, Mohammad Saifuddin and Mahedi Hasan combined for two fours and a six off Safyaan Sharif but were unable to get their side over the line.
