Thirty-six years.

That’s how long fans have been waiting to see Maverick shoot back into the skies for a sequel to Top Gun.

The 1986 cult action flick was so popular it earned a place on the National Film Registry and was instrumental in launching the career of a then bright-eyed Tom Cruise.

While diehard devotees might say you can’t improve on the original – it seems the follow-up may just have done that, if the critic reviews are anything to go by.

Ahead of Top Gun: Maverick’s release on May 26, review aggregator sites are already showing stratospheric scores for the sequel.

Rotten Tomatoes is displaying a 96 per cent positive rating, while Metacritic shows a Metascore of 81, which indicates “universal acclaim”.

In the new edition, Cruise is back in the cockpit as navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who refuses to be grounded by an advancement in rank despite his 36 years of service.

Also resuming his role is Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, while Miles Teller is a fresh recruit as Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

A handful of the film industry’s most well-respected critics gave Maverick a perfect score of five out of five stars, including Empire, The Telegraph and BBC.

They agreed saying it surpassed the original due to its soaring sequences and slick performances, with Collider critic Ross Bonaime going as far as to call it “one of the greatest sequels ever made”.

“It’s also hard not to say this might have some of the most exciting action scenes to ever hit the skies, and gives Cruise one of his best performances by returning to the role that made him a star,” he wrote.

BBC’s Nicholas Barber agreed.
